STARGAZING IN KENTING

Look for the Southern Cross in late spring and early summer

Kenting is one of Taiwan’s better low-altitude areas for finding the Southern Cross. April to June is the main season we mention, but visibility still depends on the date, cloud, moonlight, light pollution and an open southern horizon.

The constellation sits low in the southern sky and the viewing time changes through the season. Check current official astronomy information; a sighting cannot be guaranteed.

Kenting National Park event calendar →

Is tonight suitable for stargazing?

This is not a live forecast. Check four things before deciding whether to go out.

01

Clear sky

A clear forecast is only a start; low cloud, haze and overall visibility still matter.

02

Cloud cover

Cloud along the low southern horizon can hide the Southern Cross even when the sky overhead is clear.

03

Moon phase

A bright moon makes fainter stars harder to see. Lower moonlight usually helps.

04

Southern horizon

Choose a safe, legally open place with little light and no buildings or hills blocking the south.

Cloud cover, moonlight, the season and an open southern horizon all affect visibility. Check current conditions before setting out.

Season and timing

April to June is the main period we suggest. Conditions and viewing time change by date, so use current official stargazing or astronomy information.

Weather, moonlight and light pollution

Low cloud, humidity, visibility and moonlight all matter. Use an open, legally accessible place and do not enter closed or unsafe areas.

Night safety

Bring a light jacket, insect repellent, water and a torch or red light. Near the coast, watch the wind, waves, wet ground and night transport.
